Any figures obtained prior to this date maybe incorrect. This table shows the number of parliamentary electors for each parliamentary constitiuency. The total number of parliamentary electors includes ordinary residential qualifiers and attainers, services voters, voluntary patients and overseas electors. The tables are derived from data supplied to ONS by electoral Registration Officers at the end of February 2001. The 2001 Electoral Register came into effect on 16 February 2001 and is based on a qualifying date of 10 October 2000 (15 September in Northern Ireland) Attainer is the term used to describe a person who attains the age of 18 during the currency of the register, and is entitled to vote at an election held on or after his or her eighteenth birthday. Services' voters are members of HM Armed Forces and their spouses, plus Crown servants and British Council employees and their spouses residing abroad. They do not register in the same way as residents and may not necessarily reside in the area of registration. Armed forces' spouses have the option of registering as residents while in the UK. Voluntary patients are electors who are patients in mental illness and mental handicap hospitals but who are not liable to be detained there. They may register as electors only by virtue of a declaration, which gives an address other than that of the hospital. They may vote in the parliamentary constituency area in which this address is situated. Overseas electors are not resident in the United Kingdom, but must previously have been resident here and included in the electoral register (unless they were too young to register). They are registered in the same parliamentary constituency as before they went abroad or, if they went abroad before they were old enough to register, in the constituency where their parent or guardian was registered. Overseas voters cannot vote in local government elections and are, therefore, excluded from local government electorate figures. These voters were included for the first time on the 1987 electoral register following the Representation of the People Act 1985. The 1989 Act extended the qualifying period from five to twenty years and enfranchised British citizens who went abroad before they were old enough to register as electors. The residence qualification requires a person to be normally living at the address on the qualifying date even if temporarily absent. People having more than one place of residence, such as students, may therefore be included on more than one register, but they are only entitled to vote in one constituency in a general election.
